Fire Metro Overview

  • Fire Metro is the designated Fire and EMS for our community since 1962 (outside of city limits)
  • about 90% of residents currently subscribe to Fire Metro services
  • homeowners insurance covers cost of damage, but not the cost of emergency response or ambulance transport
  • property taxes includes fire assistance tax ($2.00/yr) for volunteer fire departments, not Fire Metro
  • contact Tim for proof of coverage document for homeowners insurance
  • will remove snakes
  • will do an in-home fire-prevention assessment and do fire extinguisher training
  • includes AirMed transport for when you are not at home (hiking, etc). Contact Tim to obtain an AirMed card.
  • Fire Metro will do smoke detector battery replacement (you supply the batteries)
  • you can now purchase and install 10-year detectors to replace your current ones that need battery replacement yearly.

Sabino Spring is at very low risk of wildfire

  • building construction is fire-resistant. Tile roofs. Stucco. Paved roads with landscaping
  • down-slope from Coronado National Forest (wildfires travel predominately up-slope)
  • very low consecutive fire fuels in open spaces
  • water sources (lake, hydrants)
  • easy entrances for emergency equipment
  • washes are “tucked away” and unlikely to catch fire. Most likely cause is cigarette.
  • captain says “This is a really good community guys. Things are pretty well squared away”

General FIREWISE guidelines

  • move piles of wood away from house
  • clean out lint from dryer vent
  • remove vegetation growing over the house
  • have go-bag ready. List to things to take is available in booklet. Scan photos. Take pictures of valuables.
  • have plan for pets. Have a carrier.
  • leaving for extended time: Close curtains, unplug appliances, turn patio furniture upside-down, remove flammable liquids, unplug electric vehicles
  • Pima County sheriff would notify residents of any evacuation door-to-door. Watch local news.
  • ABC multi-use fire extinguishers are recommended. One in kitchen, one in garage
  • 80% of fires are due to vehicles. Next is flammable liquids, then electrical shorts.

Fireworks that leave the ground are illegal for public. Call 911 if you observe any.
